Hi, I’m Gonçalo Gil, founder and CEO of ROOTKey. My journey started long before launching a company – at 14 I was already curious about cybersecurity, always breaking things apart to understand how they worked. That curiosity pushed me into countless projects, experiments, and side hustles. Most of them failed, but each one taught me something new and sharpened my mindset as a builder.
I’ve never been the kind of person who enjoys standing still. From hacking challenges to startup prototypes, I’ve always sought to create, test, and learn. That restless drive eventually grew into ROOTKey, where I channel everything I’ve learned about resilience, technology, and entrepreneurship into building something that lasts.
This blog isn’t about fame or fortune. It’s a place where I share thoughts that would otherwise remain in my head – lessons learned, mistakes made, and insights gained. If even one founder finds here something that helps them navigate a challenge or avoid a misstep, that’s more than enough.

As someone who launched into entrepreneurship young, I’ve leaned both on mentors and on my own stubborn determination. Reflection became my most powerful tool, and writing it all down helps make this path feel a little less lonely.
The Story of ROOTKey
The idea for ROOTKey (NOTCyberSec at the time) sparked back in 2022 while still at university, literally working from a bathroom-turned-data-center in an apartment in Felgueiras before moving into our first actual co-working space, me and my co-founder, Luís Costa, started what today is the first blockchain-based solution for cyber resilience.
ROOTKey is more than a project – it’s a mission. Born from a vision to tackle one of the most urgent problems of our digital era: insecure systems and fragile cyber resilience. We started in a humble apartment in Felgueiras and have rapidly evolved into a team solving real-world digital security challenges.
Our platform is designed to strengthen cyber resilience for businesses and institutions. By leveraging blockchain in a thoughtful and practical way, ROOTKey ensures that an organization’s data is protected, verifiable, and resilient – creating an immutable digital footprint from the moment it’s generate.
